The Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Demokritus Zervakis, recently welcomed in his office the sailor, Marilena Makri, who secured her participation in the “Tokyo Olympic Games 2020”, following her successful presence at the world championships held in Japan.
The Chief congratulated the young sailor, who comes from a military family (her father is a senior Officer), and wished her every success in both the upcoming Olympic Games and her subsequent athletic career. The 2020 Olympics were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and will take place next July.
Marilena Makris is an athlete of Famagusta Nautical Club and today she is the youngest Cypriot athlete who managed to qualify in the Olympics at the age of 17. In addition, she is the youngest athlete to qualify in the history of the Olympic Games in the sport of sailing, in which the average age of renowned athletes is 26.
Among her impressive achievements is her 4-time winning of the Pancyprian Championship, of which 3 were consecutive (2018-2019-2020), the 2nd place in women and 1st place in U21 and U19 by compatriot athletes in the Panhellenic Championship in 2019 and the 1st place in the U21 and U19 categories in the Australian Championship in 2020. Internationally, she won the 4th place in the Pan-European Laser Radial U17 Championship in 2018, in the Pan-European Laser Radial U19 Championship and in the Laser 4.7 World Championship in 2019.
The DEFENCE ReDEFiNED Team wishes every success to Marilena and the entire Cypriot Mission for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
