Four bombs dating back to World War II were detonated in Gottingen, Germany, on Saturday, following a mass evacuation of the area.
The 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) bombs with long-life fuses were dropped by the US military during the war. After detonating the bombs, teams checked the area and allowed most residents to return to their homes.
On Saturday, more than 8,000 people fled their homes in Gottingen, with police, firefighters and the German army taking part in the mass evacuation.
The operation was successful and the detonation caused extensive damage to adjacent buildings. The majority of the citizens of Gottingen returned to their homes.
It is worth noting that in many German cities, inactive bombs from World War II are still found today. Incidents like last Saturday’s take place every year.
