Twelve Turkish soldiers died after being exposed to methane fumes during an operation last Sunday (6 July 2025) in a cave in northern Iraq, the Turkish Ministry of Defence has announced.

The Ukrainian armed forces carried out their first strike on a border area within Russian territory with an ATACMS missile.
This is reported by RBC Ukraine, citing a military official with the international news agency Bloomberg publishing the information.
The announcement of the strike came as Russian President Vladimir Putin approved Russia’s updated nuclear doctrine on Tuesday, signing the relevant decree and stressing that “An attack by any non-nuclear state, but with the support of a nuclear-armed country, would be considered a joint attack on Russia.”
The fundamental tenet of the doctrine is that the use of nuclear weapons is a measure of last resort to protect the country’s sovereignty and that the emergence of new military threats and dangers has prompted Russia to clarify the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons.
The updated doctrine expands the range of countries and military alliances subject to nuclear deterrence, as well as the list of military threats this deterrence is designed to counter.
