The resumption of exploratory talks between Greece and Turkey was welcomed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Specifically, welcoming the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez, J. Stoltenberg welcomed the resumption of dialogue between the two countries and noted that “good progress” has been made in the technical talks between Greece and Turkey within NATO.
As he noted, “six meetings took place here at NATO headquarters with Greece and Turkey. The goal is to create a deconfliction mechanism, to avoid conflict, incidents and accidents at sea or in the air.”
“These meetings are ongoing and good progress has been made. These are technical military talks. They complement Germany’s diplomatic efforts to resolve the underlying dispute.”
He added that “Germany’s mediation led to yesterday’s agreement to conduct exploratory talks, which I welcome.”
“Developing deconfliction mechanisms between the military is natural for NATO. We did it before the 1990s and it proved to be very effective.”
