The Arab League expressed its support for finding a political solution to the crisis in Libya during today’s ministerial teleconference of its countries.
In its resolution, the Arab League opposes foreign interventions that facilitate the transfer of terrorists and foreign fighters to Libya, while pointing out the “central role” of neighboring countries in resolving the crisis in North Africa.
At the same time, the Arab League stressed the “need to restore Libya’s nation-state and the role of its institutions in the service of the Libyan people, away from foreign intervention.”
In addition, the Arab League welcomed the initiative of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to find a solution to the Libyan crisis, as well as all international efforts seeking peace, expressing their support to all efforts made by the United Nations. He described the initiative as an example of “constructive proposals” that “have been warmly received at regional, international and Arab levels”.
On his part, the Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned the “systematic recruitment of mercenaries and foreign fighters” in Libya.
Speaking at the Arab League’s ministerial conference on Libya today, White said he was concerned about the “internationalization of the Libyan conflict”, the rise of “foreign military intervention in the conflict” and the “continuing violations of the arms embargo”, as reported by “Al Ahram”.
The Secretary-General stressed that the Arab League is opposed to all forms of foreign intervention in Libya and to “any military solution” to the conflict. He also stated that the Arab League supports only a comprehensive political solution to the Libyan crisis, under the oversight of the United Nations and relying on Arab League resolutions and the Berlin Conference negotiations. It was also added that the Arab League is working with the UN, the African Union and the European Union so as to resolve the conflict and that it seeks to “implement the conclusions of the Berlin Conference and to consolidate international peace efforts in Libya.”
