This year marks 12 years since the heroic act of self-sacrifice of the 211 Infantry Battalion Lieutenant Charalambos Charalambous.

On November 5, 2009, while Lieutenant Charalambos Charalambous was counting ammunition at the outpost where he was serving, according to the testimonies, a grenade made a strange sound. Charalambous immediately grabbed the grenade and shouted at his soldiers to go out. An explosion ensued and the heroic Lieutenant saved the lives of his soldiers with his act of self-sacrifice.

Today, a trisagion took place in the area of the outpost where Charalambos served followed by a blood donation event held in his memory. It is worth noting that in 2015 in the context of a lawsuit filed by Charalambos’s family the court accepted the fact that the grenade was defective and dangerous, while on the proposal of the current Minister of Defence, Charalambos Petridis, the Cabinet approved Charalambos’ posthumous honour for altruism and self-sacrifice.
