Turkey and Spain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop Turkish-made Hurjet trainer-light fighter aircraft.

The deal follows the Spanish Air Force’s detailed evaluation of the Hurjet earlier this year. In July, a Hurjet prototype landed at Torrejon Air Base near Madrid, marking its first visit to a foreign country. A Spanish delegation later visited Ankara to inspect the aircraft’s capabilities further.

Although Madrid has not officially announced the number of training aircraft it will acquire, reports say Spain plans to buy 24 Hurjets to replace its ageing fleet of F-5s.

The Hurjet is a single-engine trainer-light fighter aircraft that will replace the ageing T-38M and NF-5A/B 2000 aircraft of the Turkish Air Force (TuAF), which currently has 4 on order, with an option for 12 more.

Deliveries of the first four aircraft to the TuAF are expected to begin in mid-2025, with an additional twelve in the Block 1 variant to be delivered by 2028.
