According to information, around 23:20 a commercial train heading from Thessaloniki to Athens collided with a passenger train running the route from Athens to Thessaloniki at the height of Tempi. At least three carriages were derailed while according to audiovisual material, fire broke out in some carriages.

According to the local media there are at least 2 dead and several injured, with fears of a higher death toll.

About 30 ambulances were found on the spot, while military units of the region, as well as the military hospitals in Athens and Thessaloniki, were put on standby. Strong fire and police forces rushed to the scene.

The rescue operation is developing.
