Britain | Defence Agreement with the EU Just Around the Corner
Defence Redefined
22/04/2025

Talks between London and Brussels on a new strategic defence deal are reportedly at an advanced stage, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeking to enhance cooperation and improve access for British firms to the European defence framework.

According to sources cited by The Times, the agreement could pave the way for multibillion-pound exports of weapons systems from the UK to EU member states, while also enabling British companies to participate in tenders within the European Defence Fund, worth €150 billion.

Progress in the negotiations is said to be linked to potential concessions from London on sensitive issues such as fishing rights—an area that appears to act as a “key” to unlocking broader cooperation.

Starmer is expected to host a UK–EU summit in London on 19 May, with the agenda set to include the reduction of trade barriers, the strengthening of security ties, and the restoration of a more stable and functional relationship with the Union.
