The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell called Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj last night to discuss the latest developments in the country.

The High Representative expressed his concern about the escalation of the fighting in and around Tripoli and the growing bombardment of densely populated residential areas, which resulted in casualties and deteriorating humanitarian conditions.

According to a written statement from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the High Representative “commended the Prime Minister for his government’s sincerity in actively participating in the Berlin Process and reiterated the importance of all parties to the conflict to agree to stop the hostilities, agree to a lasting truce and repeat political negotiations”.

He emphasized that the EU was committed to continuing to work for a lasting solution to the crisis in Libya, and called on the Prime Minister to work hard to ensure that the EU remains committed to this goal.

High Representative Borrell and Prime Minister al-Serraj also spoke about the EU’s new military operation, “Irini”, which aims to end the illegal flow of weapons and military equipment in Libya.

“The operation is an EU contribution to the return of stability in Libya and an operational expression of its commitment to the Berlin process under the auspices of the United Nations for Libya. The operation is developing its naval and air resources and using satellite imagery to ensure the widest possible coverage, operating within the framework of the relevant decisions of the UN Security Council “, states EEAS.
