The Limassol-based Swarmly Aero company had a strong presence during the recent Defence and Security exhibition Eurosatory 2022 in Paris. In addition, its products seem to have been used or will be used in the war in Ukraine.
Use in Ukraine
According to information from Ukrainian media, personnel of the 26th Artillery Brigade and the 120th Reconnaissance Battalion of the Ukrainian Army have already been trained in the use of Swarmly UAVs.
Specifically, the 26th Artillery Brigade was equipped with the Poseidon H10 vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) tactical UAV. It is noted that the financier of the acquisition of the UAVs in question, according to sources, is the former President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, who allegedly paid half of their value through the Poroshenko Foundation.
The H10 can be transported in an SUV or a truck (which is also the command station) with a deployment time of less than 10 minutes. It has an electric motor and four propellers that allow it to take off and land vertically.
Indicatively, its VTOL capability allows emergency take-off and landing and is designed for operations in GNSS-denied (Global Navigation Satellite System) environments.
H10 Poseidon technical characteristics:
- Maximum take-off weight: 22 kg
- Payload: 3 kg
- Operational ceiling: 4 km
- Endurance: 2 hours
- Maximum speed: 100 km/h
- Operational range: 150 km
- Operating range without satellite communication: 50 km
The other Ukrainian Army unit that received the company’s products is the 120th Independent Reconnaissance Battalion, which received the Poseidon H6 VTOL systems.
The H6 is a larger UAV, equipped with a hybrid gasoline-electric engine.
The landing gear of the H6 Poseidon VTOL UAS allows the attachment of emergency flotation aids to aid recovery in the event of an emergency water landing.
H6 Poseidon technical characteristics:
- Maximum take-off weight: 100 kg
- Payload: up to 25 kg
- Operating ceiling: 4 km
- Endurance: 7 hours
- Maximum speed: 150 km/h
- Operating range with satellite communication: 850 km
- Operational flight range without satellite communication: 150 km
The presence at Eurosatory
Swarmly also presented the Oncilla C2 and Kipseli C2 vehicles at the exhibition. The 4×4 Armored Personnel Carrier Oncilla C2 is of Polish manufacture and is considered “combat proven” as the Armed Forces of Ukraine have also been equipped with it.
Oncilla C2 technical characteristics:
- Weight: 10 tons
- Cargo weight: 2 tons
- Maximum speed: 10 km/h
- Crew: 3 people
- Operational range: 800 km
Oncilla is specially configured to carry up to 3 Poseidon H10 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to augment forces’ operational capabilities in the field. It is reinforced, among other things, with an electric generator and a telescopic antenna, while it can also be configured as a base for the Poseidon H6 and H12 with endurance of up to 96 hours and a crew of 4.
The Kipseli transport C2 vehicle is designed so that it can be used as a mobile base for the Poseidon H6 and H12 and is based on Isuzu, Mitsubishi, or Mercedes 4×4 vehicles. The superstructure is a Swarmly design and can operate in conjunction with the Oncilla C2 to support the maintenance, repair, and logistics of the UAVs.
Among other things, it has an electric motor, solar panels, space for mortar storage, and can carry up to 2 unmanned aerial vehicles.
