The State Department has officially notified Congress about the approval of the sale of parts to Turkey relating to the safety of F-16 fighter flights.

This notification concerns an earlier request for the purchase of defence equipment (worth $260 million), which is not by any means related to the request to upgrade modernization kits and purchase new fighters (worth $20 billion).

The administration of US President, Joe Biden, is ready to proceed with the sale of a small “modernization package” for Turkey’s F-16 fighter jets, according to Reuters.

The heads of the relevant Congressional Committees have already informally given their approval for this sale, the agency reports, citing sources with knowledge of the matter.

Regarding the second request, the Biden administration has chosen not to send the formal notification to Congress, as it continues to take seriously the strong objections raised by top US lawmakers.

Finally, the notification sent to Congress concerns radar and software upgrades of the Operational Flight Program (OFP) of electronic systems with Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (AGCAS) capabilities.
