A series of powerful explosions took place at the ammunition factory Sloboda, in the town of Cacak, 140 km southwest of Belgrade.

According to Serbian public television RTS, no casualties have been reported so far.

The first explosion took place at 01:30 in a storage area. Many others followed.

Sporadic explosions can still be heard even in the factory area.

During the explosions, there were 60 third-shift workers at the factory. The factory management assured that all the workers evacuated the area safely.

However – according to press reports – six workers are still in the area, trapped in a basement where they took refuge to protect themselves.

Police and army forces evacuated settlements around the factory overnight and blocked the area.

The Sloboda factory mainly manufactures artillery shells and other types of ammunition. During the 1999 NATO bombings, it was repeatedly targeted by NATO aircraft.
