Russia announced that it successfully carried out the first test launch of underwater supersonic cruise missile Tsirkon (Zircon), a weapon that President Vladimir Putin has praised as part of a new generation of unparalleled weapon systems.
The Ministry of Defence announced that the submarine Severodvinsk successfully launched the missile into the Barents Sea, which engaged its target. The launch took place at night, as shown in the video images released by the Ministry. Russia tested firing the Tsirkon missile from a warship in July.
President Putin had announced an array of new hypersonic weapons in 2018, in one of his most belligerent speeches in years, saying they could hit any place in the world and evade the US-built missile shield.
