Lockheed Martin released a 3D animation video, demonstrating the advancements regarding the Tactical Airborne Laser Weapon System (TALWS), a laser weapon pod that can be integrated, among others, on F-16V jets.

A market leader with long standing experience in aircraft construction, development and integration of optical targeting pods, development and acquisition of tracking algorithms and advanced threat detection sensors, Lockheed Martin will be soon able to present the TALWS, after three (3) years of development and testing (in a US Air Force laboratory). The TALWS will be capable, according to the company, of destroying at the speed of light, surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles.

The future integration of these systems in F-16V aircraft will be an excellent addition to their capabilities and certainly their possible acquisition will be taken into consideration from the Hellenic Air Force, the first air force in Europe to have a fleet of 84 F-16V by 2027. This decision of acquisition in each case will be a combination of many factors (i.e. cost and the effective range of the system). The only thing that is certain is that military laser technologies are no longer a science fiction scenario, but a reality instead.
