Holding bags and suitcases, on foot, on motorbikes, or crammed into cars, thousands of residents evacuated yesterday, Tuesday, August 15, in a district of the capital Port-au-Prince, which was attacked by a gang.

This neighborhood, like many others in Haiti, is subject to frequent attacks by a gang led by Renel Destina, also known as Ti Lapli, and wanted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), according to police and residents.

The Haitian authorities confirmed yesterday, Monday, that houses were set on fire. They also reported that they were informed of deaths, which have not yet been confirmed.

At least 3,120 people left the district, according to a provisional tally by Haiti’s Directorate of civil protection. This number may continue to rise, according to an AFP source.

Yesterday, Tuesday, August 15, panic prevailed on the streets of Carrefour-Fayette. Some left with suitcases on their heads, others loaded mattresses and furniture onto their car roof.

The day before, residents demonstrated against the insecurity and the police intervened to enforce the order.

The police will continue to deploy all the means at their disposal to deal with thugs who want to cause tension in the communities, they assured in a statement, but did not reassure the residents, who continued to flee.

For several years, Haiti remains immersed in a multidimensional crisis, economic, political, and security, which facilitated the territorial expansion of gangs. Heavily armed gangs are now believed to control about 80% of the Haitian capital and violent crimes are a daily occurrence.
