The Forestry Department’s fleet is being reinforced with twenty-five new fire engines ahead of the forthcoming summer season.

A groundbreaking technological advancement in underwater exploration and marine ecosystem protection was showcased at Ayia Napa Marina.
Cyprus and France joined forces to unveil EONIOS, the world’s first Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Swarm System.
This live demonstration marked a significant milestone in marine science, with cutting-edge autonomous technology poised to revolutionize ocean monitoring and biodiversity conservation.
The event, organized by the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), SignalGeneriX Ltd, and French companies Arkeocean and Lanego, was supported by the French Embassy in Cyprus.
It attracted key stakeholders from the shipping, environmental, energy, and defence sectors, including officials from various ministries and law enforcement agencies. The demonstration highlighted the capabilities of a fully autonomous underwater system designed to assist authorities and organisations in restoring and protecting marine ecosystems and designed protected areas.
Distinguished speakers at the opening ceremony included Mrs. Eliana Tofa Christidou, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Directorate-General for the Environment at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, and the French Ambassador to Cyprus, H.E. Mrs. Clélia Chevrier Kolačko.
Representatives from Arkeocean, CMMI, Lanego, and SignalGeneriX, such as Mr. Zacharias Siokouros, CEO of CMMI, Mr. Thierry Brizard, Co-founder and President of Arkeocean, Mr. Philippe Amar, Founder and President of Lanego, and Dr. Tasos Kounoudes, Co-founder and CEO of SignalGeneriX, also addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of EONIOS in enhancing marine sustainability.
A specially curated exhibition space accompanied the demonstration, showcasing groundbreaking research infrastructure and innovative technologies developed by the EONIOS consortium members. The project aims to establish a first-of-its-kind, fully autonomous solution, featuring a micro-AUV swarm system with docking stations integrated into nature-based artificial reefs.
These autonomous systems will explore, monitor, protect, and aid in the regeneration of marine biodiversity within designated underwater areas. The launch of EONIOS not only showcases technological innovation but also strengthens the deepening Franco-Cypriot collaboration in marine and maritime research.
The event, held under the auspices of the French Embassy in Cyprus, reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to strengthening bilateral relations and fostering research exchanges in marine science and technology.
As Cyprus and France continue to drive innovation in marine and maritime science, this project stands as a testament to the potential of international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges.
