In collaboration with Kifissia Municipality, ES SYSTEMS SA, a member of the defence technology EFA GROUP, installed smart computing and data recording systems to cover the needs of the municipality in matters of fire safety and detection, air quality, and atmospheric conditions as well as energy saving.
More specifically, the following systems have been installed:
- Smart Monitoring System of air quality and atmospheric conditions in three town halls of the Municipality, namely in Kifissia, Ekali, and Nea Erythraia.
Smart station for air quality measurements & meteorological data (Kifissia Town Hall)
ES SYSTEMS’ innovative and intelligent system consists of sensors that wirelessly transmit their measurements to a data transmission gateway. The data is then transferred for storage and further processing in the cloud and presented on an online platform in real-time.
The solution is a typical application of the Internet of Things (IoT) for the implementation of which innovative technologies are applied at the sensor level (MEMS technology), at the level of local processing of measurements (edge computing) as well as at the computer processing cloud with machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms.
Smart air quality and meteorological data measurement station (Ekali Town Hall).
The smart station has the ability to timely detect gasses and particles in the atmosphere that are harmful to the health of citizens and record their measurements and fluctuations in real-time so that the maximum permissible limits are not violated.
At the same time, the system accurately measures temperature, humidity, levels of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, microparticles 2.5 and microparticles 10.
The specifications of the innovative system comply with the European Union directive for measurements of environmental interest in municipalities and residential areas.
- Smart forest fire prevention, detection, and management system in the Fasideri forest of the Municipality of Kifissia.
Smart station for air quality measurements & meteorological data (Fassideri Forest)
ES SYSTEMS’ smart system consists of self-contained gas detection sensors that wirelessly transmit readings to a data portal and then to an online platform. The method of detecting fire through gasses such as carbon dioxide is the most suitable because it allows early detection of fire outbreaks even when there are no large flames but only large amounts of smoke.
This method is significantly superior to the detection method with optical sensors (cameras), which allows detection when the fire has already reached a significant extent. According to studies, the detection of fire outbreaks at a very early stage exponentially increases their probability of being extinguished by the firefighting bodies.
Data Transmission Portal (Fassideri Forest)
The sensors form a network of interconnected devices and except for gasses, they send measurements of temperature, humidity, and pressure. In the event of a fire being detected, the smart system of ES SYSTEMS sends automatic notifications with the exact location of the fire to the Municipality and is directly connected to civil protection and volunteer firefighters for immediate intervention.
- By the end of the year, ES SYSTEMS is expected to install a Smart Park Irrigation System in the Municipality of Kifissia, more specifically in the Kefalari and Mavromichalis parks.
The smart park irrigation system accurately monitors and records the environmental conditions of the area (weather station) and the soil conditions (soil moisture, conductivity, and soil temperature) and, accordingly, performs planned irrigation and automatic watering depending on the data recorded by the sensors.
This particular system has a great environmental benefit as it aims to save energy and significantly reduce water consumption.

ES SYSTEMS designs and manufactures high-quality sensors based on Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. MEMS sensors and sensor systems produced through specialized manufacturing processes measure various physical quantities such as pressure, flow, temperature, gas properties, and more.
ES SYSTEMS, by combining the multifaceted scientific background of the company’s potential, can manufacture technologically advanced sensor solutions in a short period of time starting from the design of the concept/solution to standardization and finally to the implementation and production.
The Greek EFA GROUP, which has been active in the aerospace, defence, new technologies, and security market for over 30 years, is one of the largest defence technology groups in Greece, as it employs over 420 employees, mostly Greek scientists, and engineers. The company retains offices in more than 66 countries worldwide.
