The Deputy Minister of National Defence, Yiannis Kefalogiannis, stated on the “Syndeseis” show of ERT that the largest residential program in the history of the Hellenic Armed Forces is commencing.

The first phase will concern about 800 residences and will start from Evros and the islands of the eastern Aegean, as he stated.

He pointed out that 232 buildings will be built in areas such as Orestiada, Didymoteicho, Soufli, Alexandroupoli, and Samothraki, while 560 will be built on the eastern Aegean islands such as Lesvos, Samos, Kos, and Rhodes, on smaller islands such as Karpathos and Symi, but also in areas where it is extremely difficult to find housing, for example, Mykonos and Santorini.

The ministry is proceeding with this program, he added, to be able to give an indirect increase to the income of the officers and to remove some burdens from their family budget, repaying the very great work they do every day in maintaining national integrity.

The first 800 homes are in the tender phase with the goal of being completed in 2026. In the second year, the program will concern 700 residences in Athens, Thessaloniki, and inland.

A total of 1500 houses, 15% of which will be allocated for social purposes to a number of public officials, such as doctors, nurses, and teachers, who are appointed far from their place of origin or residence, he said.
