The barge Bibby Stockholm arrives in Dorset, England, where it is to become a temporary home for around 500 asylum seekers.

London’s goal is to reduce government spending on housing immigrants.

A few hours earlier, the House of Commons had approved the Rishi Sunak government’s new immigration management law. Among other things, it provides that people who enter the country illegally will not be eligible for asylum.

The United Nations has denounced that the legislation violates international law and will have serious consequences for people in need of international protection.

Both the boat and the bill are part of the government’s overall strategy to prevent immigrants from reaching Britain by crossing the English Channel by boat.

In 2022, more than 45,000 people crossed the Channel and several drowned trying.
