The Arab League and Egypt have expressed support for the new interim government in Libya.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hailed the developments in Libya as “a step in the right direction.”

Meanwhile, in a meeting in Cairo with the Libyan Foreign Minister, his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, stressed that Egypt is ready to cooperate with the new interim government of the Libyan National Accord until an elected government takes over after the elections to be held in December.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister “reaffirmed to his Libyan counterpart the basic principles of the Egyptian attitude towards the neighboring country, Libya, in order to find a political solution between the Libyan parties, maintaining its sovereignty and protecting its resources,” the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

The meeting of the two ministers was held in the framework of the extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Arab League in Cairo, a few days after the election of the new Prime Minister of Libya, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, and the new president of the Presidential Council of the country, Mohammed Younes Menfi.

The decision was welcomed by the Arab League, which has recently welcomed the successful voting process conducted by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), which took place in Geneva, and led to the election of the new executive authority of the country.

In a statement, the Arab League called for the consolidation of international and regional positions to strengthen the UN-backed settlement effort. He added that he will help prepare for the presidential and parliamentary elections to be held in late 2021.
