Two new firefighting planes, with which Cyprus’ firefighting force will be reinforced this summer, participated in exercises yesterday with the aim of getting prepared.

The two Air-Tractor-type aircraft, which have arrived in Cyprus from Spain within the framework of a government agreement, similar to that for the Russian Kamov 32, arrived yesterday morning from their base in Akrotiri at Paphos airport for the crews’ training and their preparation for possible summer fires.

The two planes, which are under the responsibility of the Department of Forests, conducted exercises and preparatory flights in various parts of Paphos province from 10 am yesterday, with particular importance in terms of greenery. At the same time, they executed water drop tests in conditions similar to those expected to be faced this summer.

The engagement of the two Air-Tractors is considered particularly important this year for the shielding of Cyprus from the fiery flames that have caused serious damage in recent years, since as is now known, the firefighting helicopters from Russia will probably not reinforce the forces of the Republic.
