The Ukrainian military has begun using drones capable of releasing streams of molten metal to burn concealed military targets.
The so-called Dragon Drones launch a mixture of aluminium powder and iron oxide, which burns at very high temperatures, about 2,200 degrees Celsius.
The mixture can burn almost anything, including trees and vegetation, which usually provide cover for Russian troops. This tactical approach enables Ukrainian troops to expose enemy positions and neutralize them more effectively.
The Ukrainian Defence Ministry released a video a few days ago showing such a drone releasing thermite onto a forest.
A “dragon drone” in the Kharkiv direction
According to the defence analyst, Nicholas Drummond, although the drone is quite innovative, its main impact may be more psychological than physical.
The chemical mixture launched by these drones could be considered an incendiary weapon, similar to white phosphorus, and its use is discouraged because it can cause mass destruction and environmental damage.
The fires it produces are difficult to contain, and if not controlled, they can affect the civilian population.
Under international law, the direct use of thermite in civilian targets or residential areas is prohibited due to its severe effects on human health.
