Burkina Faso has accused three French diplomats of subversive activities and ordered them to leave the country within 48 hours, according to a Foreign Ministry letter seen by Reuters and Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Burkina Faso’s government did not elaborate on the charges against the deported diplomats, Gwenaelle Habouzit, Herve Fournier, and Guillaume Reisacher.

Reuters cited a source with direct knowledge of the situation as saying their deportation was due to meetings they had with civil society leaders.

France condemned the move on Thursday, Euronews reports.

There were no legal grounds for the decision by the Burkinabé authorities, the French Foreign Ministry spokesman said, adding that the charges against the three diplomats were unfounded.
