As NATO member states reject Macron’s proposal to send troops to Ukraine, some 5,000 German troops are set to move to Lithuania in 2027.
This is a historic moment as it is the first movement of German Armed Forces since World War II. The Minister of Defence met the soldiers in Bavaria.
Germany will send two combat battalions to Lithuania as part of reinforcements following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Supporting Lithuania is a priority as concerns grow about a possible attack by Moscow, especially at the border with Kaliningrad.
One German soldier even said that he voluntarily declared his intention to go to Lithuania even though his family would not follow him.
The Germans will be permanently relocated to a base just 100 kilometers from the border with Russia. NATO hopes this move will help Lithuania, as a Russian attack is likely if the war escalates.
On the other hand, objections have been expressed about the cost of moving the soldiers and the unit’s maintenance costs, which are estimated to exceed 30 million euros per month.
