A mine near the stern, which was lifted by the force of the explosion, struck a Greek-owned cargo ship in the Black Sea heading to Ukraine on Wednesday morning.
As reported by international media, the dry cargo ship Vyssos with the flag of Panama – of Greek interests – sailed from Sicily towards the Ukrainian port of Ismail on the Danube in order to load grain.
The ship, entering the channel on the morning of December 27, reportedly struck a Russian mine, according to the Ukrainian side, causing an explosion. The quick intervention of the captain prevented it from sinking, according to the same information.
Information from the Ministry of Shipping states that of the 18 crew members, the captain and the lieutenant, who are Greeks, were slightly injured.
The explosion stunned the two sailors and fell into the ship. They recovered immediately and there is no concern for their health. An Egyptian cook was also slightly injured. As the Ukrainian authorities announced, one received first aid on the spot and the second was taken to the hospital.
A tug boat is taking it to Ismail port, while it had started from a Romanian port and was heading to Ukraine.
