The US Army has successfully conducted a test launch of its new hypersonic missile system, “Dark Eagle,” after two years of delays.
Two Airbus C295 maritime surveillance aircraft have been delivered to the Irish Air Corps at Casement Air Force Base, outside Dublin.
The new aircraft will replace the two existing CASA CN235-100 aircraft that were purchased for 1994 and are primarily equipped for maritime surveillance, particularly fisheries protection.
The C295s will also provide the Irish Air Force with a range of services, including logistical support, the transport of troops and equipment, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), search and rescue (SaR) but also public utility services.
“Replacing the two CASA CN235s with two larger, more capable aircraft will enhance maritime surveillance and provide a greater degree of utility for cargo transport operations,” said Irish Defence Minister, Micheál Martin.
The total cost of the contract for both the aircraft and related training, ground equipment and spare parts amounts to 230 million euros.
The Irish Ministry of Defence made the following statement on their social media account regarding the delivery of the aircraft:
“Monday saw the arrival at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel of the 2nd of two Airbus C295 Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Total cost €230 million. They are equipped for maritime surveillance, particularly for fisheries protection.”
