Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has signed a contract through the International Fund for Ukraine for the delivery of Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS), which will be donated to Ukraine.
The delivery consists of several CORTEX Typhon systems, developed to counter a wide spectre of UAVs with hard-kill solutions. The contract value is GBP 56 million.
The British Ministry of Defense signed three contracts for the supply of air defense systems to Ukraine
One of the contracts is with the Norwegian company Kongsberg, which will transfer the CORTEX Typhon system, as previously reported by the media. The agency did not disclose the… pic.twitter.com/3fmMfQnyNp— Sprinter (@Sprinter99800) August 17, 2023
The International Fund for Ukraine (IFU) was established by the UK and international partners to identify and procure critical capabilities to be delivered to Ukraine. Norway and the UK are among the nations that have contributed to the fund.
The said weapon system is considered to be the most effective means of combating UAVs at the moment by means of machine gun fire, using a combat module like the one set on M1 Abrams battle tanks.
In particular, the CORTEX Typhon C-UAS is based on battle-proven software and hardware from Teledyne Flir and Kongsberg, including a surveillance system and Kongsberg Remote Weapon Station (RWS) along with CORTEX Integrated Combat Solution (ICS) C4I system.
Regarding the RWS, as the basis of the CORTEX Typhon system, considering the description, as well as the photo of the system itself, it appears to be the Protector RS4.
The weapon station in question is known for being installed on US Abrams battle tanks, Stryker armored personnel carriers as well as a number of other combat vehicles such as Patria AMV, Mowag Piranha and THeMIS UGV. In other words, the solution is well-known and tested.

Protector RS4 can be armed with the M2 Browning heavy machine gun, the Soviet-made NSV heavy machine gun, or the lighter M240 or M249 machine guns. The accuracy of the fire is ensured by daytime and thermal imaging cameras, a laser rangefinder, and a digital fire control system.
Another element of the CORTEX Typhon system is the CORTEX Integrated Combat Solution itself. Such a system will allow combining all sensors and weapon systems into a single system for the most effective use.
All this will be installed on the German Dingo 2 vehicles donated by the Norwegian Government. Such vehicles are actively supplied to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and are already well known in the Ukrainian Army.
