Another 17 people, Greeks and members of their families, were evacuated from Sudan on Tuesday night.
Initially, 7 people arrived by road to Egypt, where they were welcomed by an official of the Greek embassy in Cairo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement. A while later, ten more Greeks arrived in Amman, Jordan on flights of German aircraft.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, has expressed his warm thanks to his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Soukry, for the assistance provided by his country in the efforts to evacuate Greeks and their family members from Sudan. At the same time, the Greek Foreign Minister expressed his thanks to his German counterpart, Annalena Burbok.
The process and actions for the evacuation of the compatriots and their family members from Sudan continue in close coordination with our EU partners and allies, the same statement pointed out.
Meanwhile, Khartoum has turned into a war zone again. At least 80 Greeks are thought to still be in the capital. Armed street fighting has resumed in Sudan’s capital, foreign intelligence said, as a 72-hour ceasefire agreed upon at the request of the US collapsed again.
At the same time, the operation to evacuate the Metropolitan of Nubia, Savvas, seems to be coming to an end, as he reportedly boarded a plane bound for Jordan, where he is expected to arrive on Tuesday night. Metropolitan Savvas mentioned that there are other Greeks in Sudan who have not been reached.
In total, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, mentioned, more than 50 Greeks have been removed from the war-torn country so far.
