The first international conference on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military sector has commenced in the Netherlands, with the aim of establishing regulatory rules on the “destructive” capabilities of unmanned aircraft and robots.
The summit is being held in the Hague with the participation of 50 countries, including the USA and China. Russia was not invited because of the invasion of Ukraine.
AI is already being used in the military field for reconnaissance, surveillance, and situation analysis. In the future, it could autonomously select targets, such as controlling swarms of unmanned aircraft, but also in nuclear control systems.
The summit aims to be a first step in imposing rules on AI use by the military, in accordance with international agreements on chemical and nuclear weapons.
In Ukraine, the impact of new technologies, such as UAVs and cyberattacks, is already being witnessed, Dutch Foreign Minister, Wopke Hoekstra, said.
This meeting, called REAIM (Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain), is attended by Ministers, high-ranking diplomats, heads of companies, and experts in this field.
