Hellenic Coast Guard | Warning shots fired because of suspicious vessel – Another Turkish provocation?

The Hellenic Coast Guard fired warning shots in the air because of a Turkish vessel sailing under the Comoros flag, which suspiciously entered Greek territorial waters. The Turkish side has released a relevant VIDEO, the cargo of the specific vessel has not yet been known, while the Hellenic Coast Guard issued a relevant announcement to clarify the events.

In its announcement, the Hellenic Coast Guard states that at noon today, a patrol boat of the Port Authority of Mytilene spotted the Ro-Ro ship “ANATOLIAN” sailing under the Comoros flag in the sea area northwest of Lesvos. According to the announcement, the ship was moving suspiciously within national territorial waters, heading north of the island.

Subsequently, after being informed by the crew of the Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boat to stop his course in order to be inspected, the captain of the said vessel did not comply, moving along the Turkish coast. The vessel was then followed and warning shots were fired in the air. Nevertheless, the vessel did not interrupt its course and entered Turkish territorial waters, moving towards the Turkish coast.

At the same time, the Turkish Authorities were informed in writing about the incident by the Hellenic Coast Guard Operations Center.
