The Chief of the Indian Defence General Staff, Colonel Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other people have been killed in a military helicopter crash over an area in the south of the country, the Indian Air Force has officially announced, according to Reuters.
General Rawat, 63, the country’s first Chief of Defence, was appointed to the said position by the government of Narendra Modi in late 2019.
With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident.

The crash took place around noon (local time), near the city of Conoor, while the dead included four members of the Mi-17V5 helicopter crew, the Armed Forces of the South Asian country posted on Twitter.
The Chief of the Indian Defence General Staff is the Chief Military Adviser to the Minister of Defence of the country and leads, among others, the Ministry’s Department of Military Affairs, while chairing the Council of Chiefs of General Staff of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
