A military force – which remains unclear whose orders it obeys to – besieged the residence of the Prime Minister of Sudan, Abdalla Hamdok, broke in and put him in house detention, reported the first Al-Hadath television network in the morning, citing unnamed sources.

Earlier, the same force arrested at least four Ministers in Mr. Hamdock’s government and a civilian member of the governing council, according to the same sources. Troops also stormed the house of the Prime Minister’s communications adviser and detained him, members of his family told Reuters.

In a statement, the Sudanese Professional Union, which had spearheaded the mass mobilizations that led to the overthrow of the former dictator, Omar al-Bashir, in the 2019 military coup, called on citizens to take to the streets and “resist” any new coup.

The “Arab League” has expressed its “deep concern” over the latest developments in Sudan. In a statement, Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, urged all Sudanese parties to abide by the decisions and agreements reached in 2019 and 2020, following the expulsion of former President, Omar al-Bashir.

An official source close to the Secretary-General of the Arab League said that there were no problems that could not be resolved without dialogue. All decisions and agreements regarding the transitional period, which will lead to elections on the scheduled dates, must be respected, avoiding any actions that could disrupt the transitional period and shake stability in Sudan.
