The joint US-Indian military exercise “Yudh Abhyas” will be held this year from October 15 to 29 at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska.

According to US military sources, although the exercise used to involve desert operations, it will now focus on cold, mountainous environments. The change is indicative of the strategic direction in the Indo-Pacific region. In a similar environment there is a strong crisis between China and India, on the border of the two countries in the Himalayas.

The exercise will involve US Army infantry units and paratroopers and about 350 Indian Army soldiers. All participating forces are considered to have special training in cold weather warfare, operations and survival in cold, mountainous areas.

In 2022 the exercise is estimated to take place in the Himalayan mountains.
