The Military Committee, which constitutes the highest Military Authority of NATO, has been convened from September 17-19, 2021 in Athens, hosted by the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Floros.
The NATO Military Committee Conference provides an opportunity for the Alliance Defence Chiefs to meet and discuss issues of strategic importance such as NATO Operations, Missions and Actions, the Alliance Prevention and Defence Order as well as the implementation of the two new of its institutional approaches entitled “Prevention and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area” and “ΝΑΤΟ Warfighting Capstone Concept – NWCC”. The Military Committee will also discuss the “NATO 2030” initiative as well as the resulting military implications and opportunities.
The current threats and future challenges for the Alliance were the focus of the NATO Military Committee Conference.
As the chairman of the Military Commission, Admiral Bauer, stressed, the Alliance’s relations with Russia have been at the lowest level since the Cold War, since Moscow’s actions threaten stability. Likewise, Admiral Bauer also described China’s actions in terms of international relations as provocative.
The chairman of the Military Committee pointed out the increase in cyber attacks that threaten global stability and change the level of conflict. He stressed that the role of the Alliance is to protect peace and prevent conflicts. With this in mind, Admiral Bauer stated that NATO’s strategy for 2020 – 2030 is based precisely on ensuring peace and prosperity of the member states.
He stressed that the NATO Military Committee has a “key role” in the Alliance by providing advice to the political leadership, while he clarified that the Commission’s goal is that the decisions made can be implemented militarily.

To a question regarding the developments after the AUKUS agreement between the US, UK and Australia, Admiral Bauer expressed his belief that it does not directly affect NATO and explained that Australia is not a member of NATO, and there are several agreements between member states and other countries that have a political influence on NATO. In the military spectrum, however, they do not influence it. There may be complications or consequences but I do not see a direct impact on NATO cohesion.
Regarding the situation in Afghanistan, he pointed out that the developments are tragic for the country’s citizens, while he acknowledged that NATO has a lot to learn in order to understand what went well and what went wrong in Afghanistan.
For his part, the head of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA), General Konstantinos Floros, expressed his absolute satisfaction for the holding of the Conference of the Military Committee in Athens, which, as he characteristically said, takes place on the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.
He stressed that a broad agenda of issues was discussed during the Conference while emphasising that the Military Committee has many challenges ahead of it, expressing its confidence that in the end, they will be successfully addressed.
Regarding the Greek Armed Forces, he pointed out that they are a “robust force” in the Balkans, entering into synergies and collaborations with neighbouring countries, ensuring security and stability in the wider region.
