Taliban leader stated today it is too early to discuss how the Islamist movement will come to power in Afghanistan, hours after its fighters occupied most of Kabul and most diplomats evacuated.
It took the Taliban just over a week to take control of the country, with a sweeping attack that ended in Kabul as government forces, trained for years by the US and others at a cost of billions of dollars, dissolved.
Al Jazeera broadcast images of Taliban commanders pictured with dozens of armed fighters inside the presidential palace. Afghanistan is now almost entirely in the hands of the Taliban, following the collapse of government forces and the flight abroad of President Ashraf Ghani, who acknowledged their “victory” after twenty years of war.
The US military says a car bomb had exploded at an Iraqi police recruiting center at Kisak, west of Kabul.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday called on the Taliban and all other parts of Afghanistan to show utter restraint, just hours after fighters from the fundamentalist movement entered Kabul.
The UN Security Council is meeting on Monday to review the situation in Afghanistan, the Secretariat-General said. This meeting, in which Mr. Guterres is expected to present the developments, will take place at 10:00 (New York time; 17:00 Greece time)
