Libya’s national unity government today called on Turkey’s cooperation in withdrawing remaining mercenaries and foreign troops from Libyan territory, while at the same time supporting a truce between the rival forces.
“We call on Turkey to work with us to put an end to the presence of all foreign forces and mercenaries to preserve Libya’s national sovereignty,” said interim government’s Foreign Minister Najla el-Mangouch.
In a joint news conference with Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoglu in Tripoli, Mangouch noted that “Turkey’s contribution to the cessation of hostilities and the stabilization of the ceasefire throughout the country is important.”

The head of the Turkish diplomacy, for his part, criticized “those” who, in his words, “equate the presence of Turkey in Libya with that of illegal groups”. He added that the cooperation between Ankara and Tripoli was what “prevented Libya from sinking into civil war”.
“Our support has paved the way for a ceasefire and the establishment of a new, political executive power,” he added.

In the war between the two rival sides, based in Tripoli (western Libya) and Cyrenaica (eastern), Turkey actively supported the Government of National Accord (GNA) based in Tripoli. The forces of eastern Libya, under General Khalifa Haftar, were supported by the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Egypt. With the help of Ankara, the GNA repulsed the attack of Haftar forces when they tried to occupy Tripoli in spring 2019.
