The Indonesian Navy announced that the missing submarine KRI Nanggala 402 is believed to have sunk, causing the death of all 53 crew members.
Army Chief Haddi Jiajado said the presence of an oil slick as well as debris near the site of the submarine’s last dive on Wednesday (April 21) off the island of Bali was clear proof that the KRI Nanggala 402 sank. Indonesia earlier considered the vessel to be only missing.
The Commander of the Indonesian Navy said that a scan of the seabed showed that the submarine was at a depth of 850 meters, having far exceeded its survivability limits.
The KRI Nanggala, which went missing while preparing to launch a torpedo as part of an exercise, is designed to withstand depths of up to 500 meters.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Indonesian Navy said: “Based on the information which we believe comes from KRI Nanggala, we have changed the status of the submarine from ‘missing’ to ‘sunken’.”
The German-built diesel-powered KRI Nanggala 402 has been operating in Indonesia since 1981 and carried a crew of 49 members and three gunners as well as its commander, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence.
