The Russian Ministry of Defence announced that a Russian Major General was killed on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Syria, while two other service men were injured.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the major general was part of a convoy that was returning from a humanitarian operation near the city of Deir ez-Zor when the convoy struck the IED. Two other Russian service members were also injured in the explosion. The three service members were medically evacuated, but the major general, referred to as a “senior military advisor with the rank of major general” succumbed to his injuries during the evacuation process.

Furthermore, a joint Turkish-Russian patrol in the Idlib region in northwestern Syria was struck by an IED on August 16, without any injuries.
Meanwhile, fighter jets believed to be Russian bombed several towns in northwestern Syria, in a rebel-held area, in a renewed resurgence of violence following a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement about six months ago.

The planes, flying at high altitudes, dropped bombs on the areas of Harbanus and Sheikh Bahr Nahr, where tens of thousands of displaced families are housed in temporary shelters . According to testimonies, the aircraft were Russian Sukhois.
“There have been more than 20 raids, which we have witnessed, from Russian fighters stationed at Hmeimim air base,” said Abdullah Savan, a volunteer who monitors the planes and his network covering the base, which is located in Latakia province.
This month, Russian fighter jets bombed mountainous areas in Latakia, where rebel fighters have taken refuge, as well as a refugee camp near the town of Binis, in Idlib, where at least three civilians were killed.
The rebels claim that the Syrian army and its allies are regrouping on the front lines.
There is currently no reaction from Moscow or Damascus, which in turn accuses the guerrillas of violating the agreement and denying launching attacks on civilians. Russia announced last week that it had suspended joint patrols in Idlib, along the M4 motorway connecting eastern and western Syria, as guerrilla attacks intensified in the area.
