The French company Thales recently announced the upgrade of its Talios-type targeting pods.
These systems, which can be integrated into Rafale fighter jets, will use artificial intelligence-driven (A.I.) software to detect enemy threats 100 times faster.
In particular, the upgraded Talios AI-type targeting pods will allow real-time image analysis on board. This will speed up and improve the accuracy of threat detection while also making it easier for pilots to make decisions in the field.
Thales Introduces AI-Enhanced Talios Pod for Faster Target Detection on Rafale Jets
The artificial intelligence-enabled system, a product of Thales’ cortAIx accelerator, processes images up to 100 times faster compared to previous versions, and thus the French company intends to eliminate the need for external data link systems, since it will integrate this function into the targeting pod.
This is an innovation that will appear in full operational mode with the prototype Rafale F4.3 fighter jets in 2026.
Additionally, one of the key improvements to the upgraded Talios targeting pod is its ability to pre-select objects of interest using artificial intelligence.
In this way, it assists pilots by highlighting relevant information for decision-making while maintaining their autonomy in critical engagement situations.
Another major improvement is efficient data sharing, as AI will streamline data collection and delivery. In this way, communication channels will not be overloaded or burdened with unnecessary information.
Finally, according to the company, the upgraded Talios AI targeting pods have significantly improved functions, such as producing ultra-high-resolution images, as well as an advanced information link.
This link will allow video and metadata to be sent to friendly ground units, enhancing cooperation with allied forces.
