Defence Redefined

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti claims that the country’s Security Forces have doubled in size and tripled their budget with plans to transition to a national army by 2028.

Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia have escalated in recent weeks following explosions that Kosovo blames on Serbia despite a lack of evidence.

Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in 2008, an action that Serbia does not recognize. The Defence Minister recently announced that work is underway to open an ammunition factory.

Arms and ammunition for the army have been bought from NATO member countries, particularly the United States, Turkey, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Croatia, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said.

Some experts have expressed concern over the military developments, fearing that it could further exacerbate tensions in the region.

Kosovo Security Forces acquire armoured vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and anti-tank missiles.

The government claims the military deployment is for defensive purposes and will only act in coordination with its allies.
