The first Strategic Dialogue between the Republic of Cyprus and the USA is taking place today, Wednesday, October 23, 2024, in Nicosia.
The opening of the Strategic Dialogue will be attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Konstantinos Kombos, who will address the introductory comments on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Assistant Secretary of State will represent the Government of the United States of America for European and Euro-Asian Affairs, Mr. James O’Brien, who will lead an enlarged delegation.
The head of the Cypriot delegation during the all-day consultations will be the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Andreas S. Kakouris.
The work of the first Strategic Dialogue will focus on the thematic sections “International and Regional Cooperation”, “Security, Crisis Management, and Law Enforcement,” “Education/links between the two peoples,” and “Energy, Trade, Research, and Technology.” After the end of the Strategic Dialogue, a Joint Communiqué will be issued.
The initiation of the Cyprus-US Strategic Dialogue, which was agreed upon during the meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Constantinos Kombos, with the Secretary of State of the United States of America, Mr. Antony J. Blinken, last June in Washington, establishes the holding of annual high-level meetings on the basis of common themes and priorities.
In addition, it marks the deepening of cooperation between Cyprus and the USA on the basis of common democratic values and interests, with the aim of expanding a multi-level partnership.
On the sidelines of the work of the Strategic Dialogue, the Artemis Accords will be signed on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus by the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, Mr. Nikodimos Damianou, regarding the peaceful exploration and exploitation of space.
The signing ceremony will take place online with NASA in the US.
