Ukraine is developing a new cruise missile system, called Trembita, which will be able to carry strike capabilities as far as Moscow.

According to a publication of the Economist, the first designs of the Trembita were revealed in 2023. It is a significantly cheaper missile compared to similar Western or Russian missiles, being inspired by the V1 “flying bombs” used by Germany during World War II.

The exact timeline for completing the production of the new missile version remains unknown. Ukraine has spent a year and a half creating the basic design of the weapon system, the Economist reported, adding that the next step is final testing and serial production.

The basic version of the Trembita missile has a range of up to 140 km and weighs about 100 kg. The missile travels at speeds of up to 400 km per hour. The missile can be equipped with either a thermobaric or a high-explosive (HE) warhead weighing around 25 kg and can fly at an altitude of up to 2,000 m, with the ability to adjust its flight path to avoid radar detection as well as air defence systems.

In terms of dimensions, the Trembita has an overall length of 2 meters, although the exact span and diameter of the fins remain undetermined. The new, larger version of the Trembita missile is expected to enhance both range and payload capability.

While the official specs for the upgraded version remain classified, it is estimated that the new missile could potentially reach targets up to 1,500 km away.

According to the British publication, a missile costs $3,000, and a 20-30 kg warhead costs $15,000.
