Greece’s constant pursuit is the end of the Turkish occupation in Cyprus, the President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou assured the Mayor of Famagusta, Simos Ioannou in a meeting they had during her first official visit to Cyprus after taking office.
According to a statement from the Municipality, during the meeting the Mayor had the opportunity to inform the Greek President about the developments in Famagusta and to discuss with her the illegal actions of Turkish residents in Cyprus regarding the settlement of the besieged city of Famagusta in violation of Security Council resolutions.
It is also reported that the Mayor asked the Greek President to intensify the efforts to prevent Turkey’s illegal actions in the Cyprus EEZ.
As is added, Ms. Sakellaropoulou assured the Mayor of the constant pursuit of Greece, namely the end of the Turkish occupation in Cyprus, the withdrawal of all occupying troops and the abolition of anachronistic guarantees to the detriment of the sovereign Republic of Cyprus as well as the restoration of Human Rights across Cyprus. She also said that Greece is ready to fully support the resumption of talks.
Finally, it was agreed that as soon as the developments of the pandemic and the busy schedule of the President allow it, a delegation of the Municipality headed by the Mayor will travel to Athens so as to meet with state officials.
