Russian emergency services have located the spot where an Antonov An-26 plane crashed into the sea, the Russian RIA news agency reported today, after announcing that a plane with 28 passengers preparing to land in Russian Far East was missing.

Ships are en route to the crash site, emergency services said, according to RIA. The plane was heading to the town of Palana near the shore of the Okhotsk Sea.

Any communication signal with a 28-passenger plane flying over the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russian Far East was lost, Russian news agencies quoted national security services saying today.

The plane, an AN-26, was flying from the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the town of Palana in the northern part of the peninsula when it stopped transmitting reconnaissance signals, Interfax and RIA Novosti explained.

The aircraft’s 28 passengers include six crew members and one or two children, the agencies said. Two helicopters are looking for the plane that, according to various sources, may have fallen into the sea or crashed to the ground near a coal mine near Palana. The Interfax news agency quoted the local meteorological center saying that the weather was cloudy in the area.
