Amid a succession of strikes and with losses in the ranks of senior officials significant, Hezbollah’s new leader has been sworn in.

This is Hassan Nasrallah’s cousin, Hashem Saf Al Din.

His son is married to the daughter of the former leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was killed in a strike ordered by former US President Donald Trump.

Saf Al Din is also a cleric, wearing the black turban that suggests descent from Islam’s prophet Muhammad, and a sworn enemy of Israel.

He previously served as head of Hezbollah’s executive council.

The US State Department designated him a terrorist in 2017.

Last June, after the assassination of another Hezbollah commander, he threatened a major escalation against Israel.
