Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the president of Egypt, has proposed a two-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that would exchange four Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

The Egyptian president also said that talks should resume within 10 days of the implementation of this temporary ceasefire, with the aim of achieving a permanent ceasefire.

Egypt has been a key mediator along with Qatar and the United States between Israel and Hamas, but this is the first time the Egyptian president has publicly proposed such a plan.
