An armed drone attack took place against Erbil International Airport on Tuesday night, near the US consulate in the northern city of Iraq, the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said in a statement.

The attack, which took place around 22:30 (Cyprus time), did not result in any injuries or serious material damage. Firefighters put out the fire shortly after it broke out, according to the same source.

The Pentagon said in a statement that it was aware of reports about a drone attack in Erbil, but it stated that it had no reports of casualties or severe damage at the airport, where US military personnel are stationed.

US Department of Defence spokeswoman Commander Jessica McNulty did not provide any further details.

On Monday night, an armed drone attack took place against the US embassy in Baghdad, which was intercepted by the C-RAM systems installed by the United States to protect its military and diplomacy personnel.

Since the beginning of 2021, there have been nearly fifty attacks against US interests in Iraq, where 2,500 US troops remain deployed as part of the international coalition formed against the jihadist organisation Islamic State (IS).
