On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, the bilateral air exercise “GREEN BRIDGE 2023” took place within the framework of the Greece-Bulgaria Military Cooperation Program (MCP) for 2023.
During the exercise, Cross Border Operations for Air Policing (CBOAP) took place within the FIRs of Athens and Sofia, aiming at the joint training of the aircrews and the personnel of the Command and Control System (NAOC/ARS/CRC) of the two countries. Furthermore, the exercise aimed at increasing the interoperability of the participating forces during the execution of CBOAP procedures.
According to a relevant announcement by the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS), the Hellenic Armed Forces participated in “GREEN BRIDGE 2023” with 4 sorties of F-16 fighter jets and 1 C-27J SPARTAN fighter jet in a RENEGADE simulation role (procedures to counter a possible asymmetric threat from the air), while the Bulgarian Air Force participated with MIG-29 aircraft.
This activity is part of the general context of the International cooperation of the Hellenic Armed Forces with friendly and allied countries, which has been planned and carried out based on the overall planning of the Hellenic Army. The latter seeks to upgrade its operational capabilities as well as to highlight the role of Greece in the wider Balkan region as a factor ensuring peace and stability.
