Germany officially commenced its first permanent deployment of foreign troops since World War II on Tuesday.
A 5,000-strong armoured brigade will be stationed in Lithuania as Berlin moves to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank in response to Russia’s war on Ukraine.
As Politico reports, the newly formed 45th Armoured Brigade was officially activated during a ceremony outside Vilnius, where a temporary headquarters was established. During the event, the brigade’s insignia was unveiled, and the unit was placed under the command of Brigadier General Christoph Huber.
Berlin pledged the long-term deployment in 2023, marking a historic departure from decades of German defence policy that avoid permanently stationing combat troops abroad. The unit is expected to be fully operational by 2027 and will eventually be based in a new military complex in Rūdninkai, approximately 30 kilometers south of Vilnius. Until then, troops will operate from existing Lithuanian bases.
The plan includes not only frontline forces but also support units – such as a medical centre and command support teams – across multiple locations. Currently, 150 German soldiers are stationed in Lithuania, with this number expected to reach 500 by the end of the year.
For NATO, this deployment is a crucial element of the alliance’s shift towards deterrence through enhanced defence capabilities. For Germany, it represents a significant step in shedding its reputation as a reluctant military power.
Lithuania, which borders Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave and Kremlin ally Belarus, views this move as essential to its national security. The war in Ukraine has transformed the Baltic region into a frontline zone, making Berlin’s presence a symbol of NATO’s long-term commitment.
